Manistee River Trail

Later this spring we will load up our backpacks for a weekend trip in search of some of the only waterfalls in Michigan's lower peninsula. The Manistee River Trail follows the beautiful Manistee River for ten scenic miles. When linked with a stretch of the North Country Trail it creates a 22 mile loop hike along both sides of the river, an ideal weekend backpacking trip. The Manistee is said to be home to some seldom seen waterfalls, a rarity in the lower peninsula. We are hoping the timing of our trip will coincide with high water levels, revealing these falls. The area is also home to a variety of wildlife and is surprisingly undeveloped. Heading north in Michigan this early in the year can be a risky proposition, with freezing nighttime temperatures and a lingering snowpack. This may give us a chance to use our zero degree sleeping bags, though!
