Why "Moose?"

When I was a freshmen at Michigan State University I elected to go into the University housing system "blind," meaning I wouldn't have any say over who my roommate was.  I was in the Spartan Marching Band, so while the rest of the freshmen were attending orientation and figuring out where the cafeteria was, I was at marching band practices for 14 hours a day.  Upon returning from practice I would crash into my bed too exhausted to move.  It turns out the sophomores in our dorm told a group of freshmen that our hall has always had a "moose" in each freshmen class.  My roommate (who I had not met yet) instructed everyone to follow him back to our room and opened the door to reveal my 6'4", gangly frame sprawled across the way-too-small dorm bed, snoring loudly.  The group agreed "That's Moose."  It took several weeks for me to figure out why people kept saying "Hey, Moose" when we would pass in the halls.  At the time I considered a trip to a football game as outdoorsy.  After graduating from college I discovered outdoors pursuits like hiking and kayaking.  The name Moose seems more appropriate than ever.  I am large and gangly. love to hang out in the woods and in the water and, oh yeah - I'm a vegetarian.  So, Moose it is!
